Technology has dominated all. Those who try and resist, simply can’t. The control of the Hyper Corporations is almost absolute. People cannot live without their CyberWare and the latest gadgets, and a world without the Net is unthinkable.
The city of Iolanthus' dominant power can change daily, as the Hyper Corporations control vast networks and machines that keep track of the populous. These Corporations fight each other both in the real world and in the realms of CyberSpace. Only one being keeps the city from crumbling in to its own ashes, its creator, Iolanthe. An AI of immense power that has been recognised as a citizen, she keeps the city running and the balance of power in check.
Human life is a commodity and death is common place, the computer systems are like its streets, despite the latest firewalls, backup power systems and virus software, things still go wrong; but of course the Corporations will try to make you believe otherwise.
Living on the edges of the city is like living on the edge of existence, pay-days are few and far between, many turn to crime to supplement something close to an existence. Others survive doing some of the less reputable jobs for the Corporations.
Life here is hard and cheap, as the streets are filled with every walk of life from Blanks and Zeros, to Gothiks and Flatliners and of course the ever watchful eye of the Corporate Media. Existence begins to blur and many cannot remember what life used to be like, and no one dare to dream of what the future might hold. The Anarchists say living outside the city centre is the only place where life is truly lived, and you only know you’ve lived once you’ve been mugged and left for dead.
It was once a vision of the future, now crumbling under the weight of its own success. Welcome to Iolanthus. First it will control you, then try to dominate you, and finally when it has every ounce of you, it will consume you entirely.
Iolanthus, a city where dreams are made and nightmares destroy your daily life. So switch on your implant and walk down the city streets, if you're lucky you may just survive.
